Gutter Reseal and Re-hang Repairs in Kitchener
Most of what goes wrong with a Kitchener eavestrough is a fastener or a bead of sealant that gave up after one too many freeze-thaw cycles. Those are an hour's work from the ladder, and the honest job is doing them and saying clearly when a gutter is beyond them.
Repairs on this site are the ones that belong on a cleaning visit: found with the trough open, fixed with sealant, screws, hangers and hand tools, and quoted before they are done. The line between that and replacement is drawn plainly, because a patched gutter that fails next spring is not a saving.
What gets repaired
- Seams and end caps. Sectional gutters have a joint every ten feet and a cap at each end, all sealed with a gutter sealant that hardens and cracks with the seasons. The old bead is scraped out, the joint cleaned and dried, and resealed. Seamless aluminum has joints only at corners and ends, so there is less of this.
- Spikes and hangers. The 1950s to 1970s houses of Stanley Park, Country Hills and Laurentian often still hang on spike-and-ferrule: a long nail through the trough into the fascia that backs out a little every winter until the gutter sags. Spikes are replaced with screw-in hidden hangers into sound wood, and a run sagging between hangers gets more of them.
- Pitch. A short run that holds a puddle after a flush is not falling to its outlet, and standing water is what freezes and splits. Re-hanging that section a touch higher at the far end fixes it. Re-pitching a whole side is usually a replacement conversation.
- Downspouts and extensions. Straps rusted through, a downspout swinging off the wall, an elbow split by ice, an extension that did not survive the snowblower. Replaced or reattached on the visit.
- Pinholes. A rust pinhole in a steel trough or a puncture in aluminum takes a proper gutter patch. A trough rusting along its length does not, and is not patched.
What does not get repaired here
Replacing runs of eavestrough, installing new gutters, fascia and soffit repair, and anything that calls for a brake and coil stock. Those are installation work and this site does not take them on. When a gutter is finished, you hear that, with photos, and go to an installer for that quote.
Why things fail faster here
Environment Canada's normals for the Region give about 158 days a year with a low at or below freezing, with December highs averaging just above zero and lows near -7 °C. Every day like that, water standing in a trough expands and contracts, and sealant, spikes and the fascia behind them take the strain. An eavestrough that drains completely, with nothing standing in it through the winter, outlasts one that holds a puddle by years. Getting the pitch and the outlets right is the repair that prevents most of the others.
Fascia on older houses
Behind the gutter on a Victoria Park or Mount Hope house is often original wood fascia, sometimes soft after decades of overflow. Hangers will not hold in it, and a gutter re-hung into rot falls again. If the fascia has gone, that is said in the quote, because it is carpentry before it is gutter work.
Frequently asked questions
My gutter drips at the corner after rain. Repair or replace?
Repair, almost always. Corners on sectional gutters are mitred joints full of sealant that has given up; they are cleaned and resealed. If the corner metal itself has rusted through, the corner piece can often be replaced on its own.
Can you re-hang a gutter that is pulling off the house?
If the fascia is sound, yes: spikes out, screw-in hangers in. If it is pulling off because the fascia has rotted, the fascia is the job and that is carpentry. You get a photo so you can see which it is.
Do you replace sections of gutter?
No. Cleaning, guards and minor repairs only. Replacing runs, new installation and fascia or soffit work are an installer's job, and you will be told plainly when that is what you need.
